Result

I managed the Pure Joy App end-to-end from founder vision through shipped product, leading a cross-functional team of designers, engineers, and QA across iOS and Android. The app launched publicly, earned a 4.9-star App Store rating, launched a subscription business model, and remained actively maintained by Kelsey J Patel Inc. through 2026.

Problem

Kelsey Patel is a wellness teacher with a multi-modal practice (meditation, EFT tapping, reiki-infused sound, yoga, astrology) and an engaged audience. She wanted to translate her practice into a digital product that gave her a direct relationship with paying subscribers, not mediated by social-platform algorithms or sponsored-content cycles.

The constraints. A non-technical founder with strong product instincts on content and brand but no UX or platform-conventions background; a multi-modal content scope (movement, meditation, EFT, sound, astrology, sleep) that had to be organized into a coherent user experience without becoming a content firehose; and cross-platform delivery (iOS and Android) from a small consulting team.

My Role

End-to-end ownership across the consulting engagement.

Product structure and information architecture. Worked with Kelsey to translate her thesis (mind-body-spirit content, expert curation) into an information architecture and user flow that respected platform conventions and supported her brand voice.

Wireframes and design. Built and iterated wireframes, ran the design conversation with Kelsey, owned the design submission and approval cycle.

Client management with a non-technical founder. Kelsey had strong product instincts but no formal UX training, and several of her instincts ran counter to platform conventions in ways that would have hurt user retention. I built trust early enough to push back diplomatically on patterns that violated user expectations, walked her through the underlying user-behavior reasoning, and translated her content vision into design decisions that respected both her brand voice and standard UX norms.

Build management. Ran the engineering team through implementation, coordinated across designers and engineers.

QA participation and management. Participated in QA cycles directly and managed the QA workstream.

Client relationship, scope, and invoicing. Owned the day-to-day client relationship, scope management, change orders, and invoicing through the engagement.

Launch. Shipped the app to Apple App Store and Google Play.

Solution and Process

Organized the multi-modal content scope around a mind-body-spirit framework that gave users a navigable structure without collapsing the breadth of Kelsey's practice into a flat list.

The subscription architecture (Pure Joy Plus at $12.99 monthly or $108.99 annual with a 3-day free trial) was the founder's thesis. She wanted recurring revenue tied directly to her audience, not ad-dependent or one-time purchase revenue.

Key judgment. When Kelsey's product instincts ran counter to platform conventions, I pushed back with evidence-based reasoning rather than deferring. This protected the product's user-retention potential while preserving her content vision and brand voice.

The meditation player. Video and audio sit in one session view rather than in separate modes, because the content library mixes both and users should not have to know which they are opening.

Impact and Metrics

Live on both major app stores with a 4.9-star App Store average rating. Subscription business model launched at $12.99 monthly or $108.99 annual. The app remains actively maintained by Kelsey J Patel Inc. through 2026, indicating sustained business value rather than a launch-and-abandon outcome.

The client was sufficiently satisfied with the engagement that she referred a parallel project directly to me at 57Blocks, generating a follow-on engagement on the strength of our working relationship.

Reflection

In the discovery phase, I would have pushed harder for explicit willingness-to-pay validation. Subscription products are pricing-first products, and we anchored on the founder's audience trust without quantitatively testing how that trust would translate to paying subscribers. The product quality held up (4.9-star rating, sustained operation), and the founder's audience-to-subscriber conversion thesis was hers to execute through her go-to-market work outside consulting scope. But the upstream PM responsibility, validating the assumption before committing to a subscription architecture, was within scope, and I'd run more rigorous paying-user research and pricing-tier exploration during discovery on a similar engagement today.
